On March 19th, 2003 the US, against the wishes of the United Nations and most of the world, invaded Iraq. Around the world the move was greeted by protests and anger. However, the US administration kept arguing that the invasion was necessary to ensure global security from the weapons of mass destruction that Saddam turned out not to have.
I’m going to be honest about my opinion of the war. I wasn’t actively against it.
Before the war, I clearly remember there being a shortage of accurate information, and plenty of propaganda and misinformation. So my opinion was that I could not take either side passionately given the ignorant position I was in, and that other people who took a strong position based on poor or mis-information were idiots.
In a polar situation like this, one side was always going to be right, and the other wrong. As it turns out, the protesters were right.
So here we are, over three and a half years later. By various estimates thousands of innocent people have died.
I’m not going to analyse the war, or the occupation or the rights and wrongs of anything here, frankly, in this discussion it’s not important and needs to be put aside.
The question that I want to ask is, isn’t it time for the world to engage in Iraq? Haven’t we (the rest of the world) taught the US and it’s allies enough of a lesson? Even if we think that the US should have to sleep in the bed they’ve made, don’t we owe it to Iraqi’s as global citizens to do something?
For clarity, I’m from New Zealand, and our government’s anti-war policy is close to 100% supported. However we’re well known for our success in peace making and keeping missions, primarily in the pacific, but also with some middle east experience. I think it’s time for us and other UN nations to get involved in Iraq.
The UN seems strangely quiet on Iraq. On their ‘latest statements’ page for Iraq, the latest entries are from June relating to the murder of a Russian diplomat and the Zarqawi death.
However, there are a pile of news articles relating to this topic. I guess news articles must be less formal than ‘statements’?

From the middle article I learnt that the current security force is UN mandated. However given the limited number of countries involved, it’s obviously far from well supported. This is reinforced by the third article where Kofi clearly states, “I do not believe, given the bitterness and the level of violence, that they can do it alone. The international community has to help them do it and work with them.â€
I agree. It’s time to show Iraq that the rest of the world cares more about their lives than they do about their bitterness towards American foreign policy.
